Enterprises are increasingly seeking intelligent, adaptive solutions to defend their communications technologies as cyber threats grow more sophisticated and traditional email gateways continue to lose their effectiveness. The desire for proactive AI-enabled cybersecurity solutions is only growing as organizations make their transition to the cloud and email communication becomes the primary touchpoint for organisations.

Founded by CEO Evan Reiser, Abnormal Security is at the forefront of this shift with its AI-native email security platform that reimagines how organizations can defend against emerging threats of today. Abnormal uses behavioral data science to analyze behavior and develop user and environment baselines of normal activity so that abnormal behavior is detected, which gives way to signals for phishing, business email compromise (BEC) and supply chain attacks. Abnormal aims to make email safe for business by transitioning away from traditional rules-based filtering that is reactionary and toward baseline and context aware threat detection capabilities. With the dysfunctional nature of legacy email controls, many organizations are still reeling from the impact of social engineering based attacks, Abnormal is supporting a diverse spectrum of enterprises from mid-market companies to Fortune 500 organizations. Abnormal Security's core product is an AI-based, behavior-based email security platform that utilizes advanced machine learning to recognize abnormalities in user behavior and prevent threats such as phishing, business email compromise (BEC) and supply chain attacks. Abnormal is integrated with a cloud email platform such as Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, which can autonomously analyze 45,000 signals identifying those threats and blocking them before they reach a user. Administrators are able to manage security using a simplified dashboard that summarizes threat types, threat actors, and anomalies. If needed, its architecture requires little to no email rerouting, and execution is quick and frictionless, as it has no additional software requirements. Another flagship product is Abnormal InSights, which surfaces executive-level summaries and trends to provide relevant decision context on the organization's threat landscape. The data-driven context empowers security teams to fine-tune posture, without adding layers of complication to security workflows, which is usually the case when adding additional products. In addition to protecting email, Abnormal is gradually expanding its platform beyond email protection, adding Account Takeover Protection, Email Productivity Enhancements, and Supply Chain Intelligence—adding further layers of risk visibility into an organization's digital ecosystem. By fusing and bridging automation with precision detection, Abnormal provides enterprises the means to reclaim the advantage. Abnormal's business model centers around enterprise licensing, allowing businesses to subscribe to various layers of security analytics and incident insights. Pricing is customized or tailored around the organization's needs based on the number of users, features, and terms. They do not publish standard pricing, but based on estimates, annual subscriptions typically range from $25,109 to $74,840, and the average is about $37,766. There were discounts of 5-20% for organizations with 201-1,000 employees, more so in the case of multi-year contracts or if they are obtained via authorized resellers. Abnormal Security has a free trial so potential buyers can test-drive the platform before ultimately committing to a subscription. To be the most accurate with pricing to your organization's needs, they recommend you reach out to Abnormal Security and/or authorized resellers.

This model really worked for Abnormal, as evidenced by their strong growth, which is exceeding $200 million in ARR in 2024. Abnormal had extraordinary growth in 2024 and has over 2,400 enterprise customers, including the likes of Xerox, Urban Outfitters, and Airbnb. Although Abnormal has not disclosed specific profit figures, its revenue performance and operational performance suggest a healthy trajectory. Abnormal continues to grow with precision detection of threats, low friction deployment, and the expansion of products and customers.Abnormal completed the largest Series D funding in history, raising $250 million in August 2024, bringing its total funding to more than $600 million. The Series D round was led by Wellington Management, with all the existing investors, Greylock Partners, Menlo Ventures, Insight Partners, ICONIQ Growth and the CrowdStrike Falcon Fund. With the funding, Abnormal became a unicorn valued at $5.1 billion, one of the most valuable private cybersecurity companies in the world.

Beyond financial growth, the firm has experienced significant advances in organizational and geographical expansion. With sites in its San Francisco headquarters and regional offices in New York, Toronto, London, Sydney, Singapore, and New Zealand, Abnormal now employs more than 778 employees around the world. This global reach enables them to serve customers in North America, Europe, and Asia/Pac, and Abnormal expects to continue to grow in high-growth international markets in 2024. The organisation operates in a competitive landscape highlighted by the incumbents Proofpoint, Mimecast, Avanan, and Tessian. Within this competitive landscape Abnormal's unique value proposition is its AI-native, behavior-based platform leading to accuracy, automation, and low friction implementation. While competitors primarily rely on rule-based filtering with limited capabilities to take action, Abnormal uses advanced anomaly detection as threats evolve over time. Abnormal's unique focus on eliminating false positives, delivering context-based precision, and improving security workflows helped emphasize its unique advantages.

The company's CEO, Evan Reiser, sees a bright future ahead: "We believe that behavior is the foundation of great security. By building a platform that truly understands people and their actions, we’re able to stop the attacks others miss." Abnormal, with its continuous focus on AI and machine learning, unrivaled UX support, and top-notch accuracy for threats, is uniquely poised to stay ahead of the modern enterprise cybersecurity space. With an expanding client list, unicorn valuation, ongoing funding strategy, worldwide footprint, and ever-increasing innovation, Abnormal is a leading force in running a new operation for changing digital security infrastructure. Abnormal is more than simply changing how companies find and respond to threats - it is redefining what email security is altogether.
